After winning the Battle of the Kootenai against Eureka, 14-8, on May 7, the Libby High School softball team went on to Butte, where they went 2-2 in several close games.

Libby Head Coach Dean Thompson gave the Lions credit for how hard the young team played against the Loggers.

“They really did well,” Thompson said. “You know, we’ve played with some of those girls since they were young.”

“From the bottom of their order to the top of their order, they hit the bal real well,” he said.

Both teams kept their errors low, and Libby simply out-hit Eureka, Thompson said. “I see them placing at the state tournament.”

Thompson said he felt the Loggers played well, stopping the ball and keeping the Lions down on runs.

Looking toward the Butte Tournament, Thompson said the Loggers were looking forward to seeing how they measured up against some of the eastern Montana teams.

With one last game for the regular season when they face Polson in Libby, Thompson said he felt things were still wide open for the conference.

Still, the Loggers are ready to take on the State Tournament, he said.

“These kids have been there,” he said. “And I think they’re ready to go. We’ve just got to get there. That’s the hard part.”

The final game of the regular season for Libby is tomorrow at Remp Field. Junior varsity is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m., with varsity following at 3 p.m.
