Libby VFW seeks eligible seniors for monthly food distribution

Libby VFW Post No. 1548 seeks more clients age 60 and over for a United States Department of Agriculture program it participates in.

The aim of the Commodity Supplemental Food Program is to supplement the diets of low-income seniors with foods such as oats, dry beans, low- or no-sodium canned vegetables and peanut butter.

According to a January 2018 fact sheet, program foods “do not provide a complete diet, but rather are good sources of the nutrients typically lacking in the diets of the beneficiary population.”

The Post distributes food once every other month, said Jule Mason. It usually happens on the third Thursday, except when a blood drive moves it to the following day.

The next distribution is 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 16 at the Post at 114 West 2nd. St. in Libby.

“We’re always looking for people who qualify,” Mason said. “If someone is not already signed up for this program, applications are available at the Post canteen seven days a week after noon.”

Though certain children are eligible for participation, Mason said the Post only serves seniors.

The program served an average of 630,000 people a month and was appropriated $236,120,000 during fiscal year 2017, the fact sheet states. The program operates in most states, the District of Columbia and a handful of Indian reservations.
