Letter: Baucus, Rehberg need to explain votes
Posted: Wednesday, Jul 23, 2008 - 10:20:47 am MDT
Dear Editor:
I want both Max Baucus and Denny Rehberg to explain their votes on FISA to the people of Montana.
In my lifetime, I have never seen our politicians come so close to losing sight of the principles of our Constitution.
In April 2005, the Montana State Legislature overwhelmingly passed Senate Joint Resolution 19, stating that, while the 2005 Legislature supports the federal government's fight against terrorism, the so-called Patriot Act of 2001 grants authorities sweeping powers, that violate citizens' rights enshrined in both the U.S. and Montanan Constitutions.
Only 12 state representatives - all Republicans - voted against the measure.
One of them, Rep. Bob Lake, was quoted as saying, 'So, they're going to get this thing back in D.C. and say, 'OK, Montana doesn't like what we're doing. So what?' It has no meaning to it.'
Baucus and Rehberg did not defend our Constitution. They have ignored what they know Montanans want. They have voted to give more power to an administration that already abuses the power they have. They have cooperated with the Bush Administration in circumventing the Constitution. They support an administration that shows no regard for the good of the American people, or the concept of civil rights.
Sen. Jon Tester defended the Constitution and represented what most Montanans want by voting against FISA. Baucus and Rehberg seem to have forgotten why we sent them to D.C.
It is time for them to answer to their constituency.
