Letter: Noble goals for land grab
Posted: Wednesday, Jul 23, 2008 - 10:20:47 am MDT
Dear Editor:
Sen. Baucus proudly announced plans for the government to purchase 320,000 acres of Plum Creek Timber Co., land.
This is a 'once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to protect these lands for our families and future generations,' Baucus said. 'It will keep jobs in Montana and help maintain our communities.'
The senator did not elaborate on how this land grab would accomplish these noble goals, but not to worry, the government is doing such an outstanding job of managing the lands it already has that I'm excited about the benefits that will soon accrue.
I'm comforted to know the government has $250 million for its share of the 'Montana Legacy Project.' I was afraid it might be short of financing after it bails out all the lending institutions in the wake of the home mortgage crisis.
