Libby junior Ryggs Johnston set his third state record in as many seasons, carding a 6-under-par 66 at Sidney Country Club on Saturday to win his first Class A state golf championship.

Johnston, who won the last two Class B titles, broke the 10-year-old Class A record for 36 holes, finishing at 10-under-par 134 for the tournament. The mark blows away the old record, set at 3-under 137 by Whitefish’s Sam Krause in 2006 at Butte Country Club.

Johnston led by double digits for most of the second day, beating Billings Central’s Liam Clancy by 12 strokes.

Polson had three all-state finishers as Carson McDaniel placed third with a 152, Matt Hobbs was eighth at 161 and Trey Kelley 15th at 166. The Pirates fell just short of the team title, finishing nine strokes back of Laurel.

Whitefish finished in fifth place, led by Brendan Buls’ 170.

The Whtiefish girls were third as a team, well back of host Sidney, which lapped the field by 51 strokes. Megan Archibald was the top finisher for the Bulldogs in 10th at 194. Ella Shaw was in 11th at 194 and Gracie Young fell into a tie for 13th at 200.

Polson finished fifth as a team, led by Cali Cannon with a 206. Ronan’s Brooklyn Olson finished sixth overall to claim all-state honors.
